1. Introduction
The vocational & Occupational Counselling (VOC)
test is an expert system, embodying human knowledge regarding personality types, special aptitudes and abilities, and corresponding work environments. The reports are produced automatically, without human intervention, following extensive analyses of the answers the individual gives during the administration of the tests. We can thus claim that the results are objective. Besides, the test embodies special algorithms for checking the validity of the subject's answers, producing, in effect, a truth score.
The knowledge contained in the database of the
battery is classified by age, sex and profession, and is based on extensive analyses of thousands of professionals as well as students of all ages. In other words, the tests have been verified and validated on a very large sample of real cases. The results of VOC can be used to support tasks of human resources management, occupational guidance and personal development. More specifically, the findings of the reports can:
a) Identify the academic department / profession / speciality that matches your personality and your inclinations.
b) Verify whether the occupational area / speciality you are engaged in is compatible with your personality.
c) Identify alternative occupational areas / specialities, vocational interests or professions that are compatible with your personality.
d) Support decisions concerning placement of individuals in departments, undergraduate or postgraduate courses of study, areas of specialisation, recruitment, transfer and promotion of employees.
2. Theoretical background
The test investigates the individual's personality, inclinations, interests and preferences, and proceeds to identify those academic departments, professions or specialisations that are most suitable. Personality is analysed under several factors and is subsequently related to congruent work environments, professions and specialisations. With these in mind, the individual can take the right decisions and adopt the strategy most suitable for selected work environment.
VOC is based on special research regarding professions and personality, and utilises psychometric methods and well established methodologies for occupational guidance and analysis of preferences. It utilises the Kuder preference scale of 10 occupational areas: Outdoor, Mechanical, Computational, Scientific, Persuasive, Artistic, Literary, Musical, Social Sciences, Clerical, as well as the six personality types of Holland (Realistic, Investigative, Artistic, Social, Enterprising, and Conventional).
3. Administration details
The test is user-friendly and can be completed within 30 minutes (approximately). The subject uses a unique personal code to activate the test on the computer and proceeds to answer a series of questions. It is administered by specially trained consultants, who, thereafter, undertake to explain the results produced. We stress the fact that the results of the reports are used for counselling purposes and general reasons of "know thyself" and that, ultimately, it is the counsellor and the subject who have the responsibility of taking the final decisions.
The test was designed by Professor E. J. Yannakoudakis and is now being maintained by the company Computer Academy Ltd. (35, Kolokotroni Street, Kifissia 14562, Athens, Greece, Tel. +30.210.8083035, +30.210.8084695, Fax. +30.210.8081645,
